OTHER PROGRAMS
Veterans today are facing ever-growing transition challenges due to lengthy and often numerous deployments. In addition to combat stress, readjustment issues could include changes in family roles, children born and grown during absence, and job changes/unemployment. Society’s view of the conflict as well as grief/loss, guilt, sensory overload, and little to no transition time complicate matters. If combat stress and reintegration issues go unattended, veterans can face a lifetime of problems in both their personal and professional lives. These issues create not only a large burden for the veteran and his/her family, but also among taxpayers, who pay the price for long term disability, unemployment, homelessness, incarceration, and suicide prevention efforts.
Studies conducted by The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research show that, among those veterans who were evaluated and determined to show signs of mental anguish, approximately 63% (283,000) struggling with reintegration issues will NOT seek mental health assistance due to the stigma and career consequences. In addition, it has been well documented that active duty military readiness and retention is severely impacted by these concerns.
Freedom & Honor are training & experiental programs for personnel of the U.S. military (veterans, active duty, Reserve and Guard), with a focus on those struggling with combat stress and readjustment issues resulting from one or more deployments to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), and other foreign military operations. Freedom and Honor programs are part of the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service and Education Center located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The organization has an open door policy to serve veterans from all past conflicts. Freedom & Honor programs have been designed by training experts and combat veterans. The flagship program of Freedom & Honor, Return to Honor, is a 2.5 day cognitive and experiential program using training methodologies proven effective in dealing with trauma. Freedom & Honor workshops integrate a peer-to-peer approach that helps individuals learn how to re-establish connections with their friends, families, occupations, and society as well as to reduce the impact of combat trauma. As a post-deployment training, Freedom & Honor workshops are not mental health programs.
Want to help us with our mission? Your contributions will go directly towards funding our 3 day workshops, providing valuable services to veterans and their families.
Costs: The cost of the 3 day workshop is free to veterans and their families. The costs to conduct the Freedom and Honor initial 3-day program will vary depending on location, meals & lodgings and number of participants. Basic costs for a 15 on 15 ratio plus lead facilitators and including the family integration is $20k. This provide includes meals and lodging for all those participating. The Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge is seeking funding through private corporate donations, state funding and from the VA/DOD as well as working with direct funding by the military base. Marketing and sponsorship opportunities are also available.
